Dog Adoption Centers [By State]

How to adopt a dog through an Animal Shelter or Dog Adoption Center

There are many dog adoption centers in the United States and around the world that provide a venue for people to adopt a dog. These dog adoption centers can be found in most major cities. A good place to start looking is your local shelter or humane society.

The Best Dog Adoption Centers In Every State

Every state has at least one shelter that is a great place to adopt a pet. Follow this guide to find a local dog adoption center.

To determine which adoption center is the best in each state, we looked at factors such as the number of animals they care for (both directly and on behalf of other shelters), whether or not they provide medical attention to these animals, how much space they have available, and if their adoption process encourages pet owners to think carefully about what sort of pet would make a good companion for them.

We’ve also included stories about the pets who landed in these shelters, how they became homeless, and what kind of family welcomed them to their new home.

Alabama Dog Adoption Center

Alabama is home to the Dog Adoption Center, which takes in thousands of dogs every year into their state-of-the-art facility. The center is operated by Jefferson County animal control and is located in the Birmingham area. Not only do they take in surrendered pets but also help other areas within Alabama with overcrowding problems by assisting animals who are displaced during natural disasters. They helped animals affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 after tornadoes ravaged the state in 2011, and when a fire destroyed an animal shelter near Huntsville last year. There are two adoption rooms at this location, one for puppies/adults and another for older/special needs dogs.

Not only does this shelter have great rates of adoptions (over 98% of all pets that come to them are adopted into new homes) but they also have a great “Your First Visit” packet which provides pet owners with information on how to create a safe home, train their dog, care for their teeth, and choose the right food. They make sure every adopter is ready for this life-changing step.
